Regular queries and reassessments
A good sign of high-quality physiotherapy treatment is when the therapist repeatedly asks about your pain progression in the following sessions. This makes it possible to recognize whether certain measures were effective or not.
Regular reassessments – i.e. repeating the same tests from the initial examination – are just as important.
This is the only way to see what changes have actually taken place.
Objective measurements are particularly useful here, for example:
- Standardized pain scales
- Force measurements with suitable equipment
- validated questionnaires
Transparent communication and joint decisions
Modern, evidence-based physiotherapy is characterized by open communication.
The therapist should keep you informed about your progress and explain different treatment options. You should be able to choose the option that best suits your life.
You should also always be able to understand why certain measures are being taken – and have the opportunity to ask questions if something is unclear.
Movement as a central pillar
Movement is at the heart of modern physiotherapy.
Typical components are
- Targeted exercises
- Structured training plans
- Movement or running logs
- Active tasks that you can carry out yourself
Passive measures such as massages or manual techniques can be useful as support – but never as the sole therapy.
When an operation can be useful
Surgery should only be considered if:
- there is a clear medical indication
or - conservative therapy remains unsuccessful over a longer period of time
In such cases, the physiotherapist can also address the option – but never right at the beginning without a reason.
Support with returning to work
Another quality feature:
The therapist actively supports your return to work.
You can recognize this by the fact that he/she:
- asks about your situation at work
- Discusses strategies for re-entry
- also offers contact with the employer if required
