Current research shows that static stretching before training – as many people routinely do – has no significant effect on injury prevention. Stretching therefore does not automatically protect against injury.

Dynamic warm-up is more effective

While static stretching does not affect the likelihood of injury in the short or long term, dynamic warming up is much more effective. It prepares joints, muscles and the nervous system specifically for the upcoming strain.

Why injury risks are difficult to classify

The topic is generally complex:

  • not every sport has the same risk and stress factors
  • Probabilities of injury depend on many individual factors
  • There is no “one” prevention method that works the same for everyone

A differentiated view is therefore important.

Should you stretch?

Can I stretch?
Yes, of course. Static stretching has no negative effects.

Do I need to stretch?
No – not necessarily.
Whether stretching makes sense depends on the person:

  • your personal goals
  • your mobility requirements
  • your sport
  • your individual requirements

Stretching is therefore neither an obligation nor a panacea – but an optional supplement.
